For those of you who do not enjoy attempting to wade your way through a dense, cumbersome tome about Little Rock’s 197-year history, we suggest that you pick up a copy of Kimberly Reynolds Rush’s Historic Photos of Little Rock. Not only will you learn more about our captial city, but you will also be suprisingly delighted by the photo-book’s hundreds of fascinating black and white images. The book starts at the very beginning, chronicling early settlers and the city’s first storefronts and streets continuing through the building of the Arkansas State Capitol and the floods of the 1920s. The final section includes the desegration of Central High School and a visit from President Truman in 1949 after the end of World War II complimented by a celebratory parade.
Everyone in our offices has fallen in love with this book, and we all want to take home our own copies! For only $39.95, you can also enjoy this amazing collection of photographs. Our personal favorites include a shot of the original Arkansas Deaf Mute Institue in the 1870s (now rebuilt as the Arkansas School for the Deaf) on page 18, a group photo of the Little Rock Travelers baseball team in 1902 on page 52, and a sweet picture on page 163 of members of the “Little Rock Nine” dining with Daisy and L.C. Bates on Thanksgiving Day in 1957.
