MORGAN FREEMAN TO ACCEPT AWARD AT THE OXFORD AMERICAN’S FIRST-EVER BEST OF THE SOUTH GALAMagazine also will present new $10,000 literary prize
-Nigel Parry
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Feb. 2, 2010) — Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman will accept The Oxford American’s inaugural award for Outstanding Contributions to Southern Culture at the magazine’s first-ever Best of the South Gala in Little Rock on Saturday, April 3, 2010. Freeman was nominated this morning for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Nelson Mandela in the film “Invictus”.
“We are very pleased that Morgan Freeman will be the first recipient of this award, which we hope will create a long-standing pantheon of great Southern cultural figures,” said Warwick Sabin, the publisher of The Oxford American.  “He was our first choice for this recognition, not only because of his remarkable career and accomplishments, but because he has remained involved with his community in Mississippi and has done so much to improve it.” In addition, The Oxford American announced that is attaching a new $10,000 prize to its award for Lifetime Achievement in Southern Literature, which also will be presented at the Best of the South Gala.  The first award was bestowed in 2006 to the novelist Donald Harington, who recently passed away.  This year’s winner will be named in the coming weeks. The entire Capital Hotel — including all of the public and private rooms — are reserved for this special event.  Only a limited number of tickets will be available for the evening, which will include a pre-event VIP reception, a cocktail reception, a four-course dinner, and a special awards program featuring celebrity entertainment.  The food will be curated by John T. Edge (the James Beard award-winning expert on Southern cuisine), and prepared by Lee Richardson, the Capital Hotel’s executive chef. “We envision a lively and fun event that reflects the character and personality of The Oxford American, highlighting music, literature, food, art, and other creative expressions of Southern  culture,” Sabin said.  “It will be a sophisticated and entertaining affair anchored by celebrity presenters.” Cindy and Chip Murphy and Riley Lipschitz are chairing the awards gala, which will raise money to support the operations of the magazine, which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  Tickets begin at $500, and tables of ten also can be purchased. Glazer’s is the gala wine and spirits sponsor. More details about the event available at http://gala.oxfordamerican.org <http://gala.oxfordamerican.org/> .

Support Haiti Relief and Recovery Efforts
(Little Rock) Hosted by Governor Mike Beebe and First Lady Ginger Beebe, a group of Arkansas’ finest musicians and visual artists are coming together for a benefit concert on Friday, February 5, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to midnight at the Statehouse Convention Center in Downtown Little Rock.
“The global outpouring of aid has been tremendous,” said Stacy Sells of Cranford, Johnson, Robinson and Woods. “However, a beautiful thing has happened – a group of Arkansas’ most talented musicians and artists were seeking a way to have their own tribute here in Arkansas for Arkansans to somewhat celebrate the spirit of endurance we’re watching from abroad in Haiti - and to celebrate the spirit of Arkansans who always seem to rise to the occasion. So while there’s been a global outpouring of aid, today we’re announcing Arkansans for Haiti Relief.”
Featured bands include: Charity Vance, The Rockets, The GroanUps, Tragikly White, Kemistri featuring Nicky Parrish, Jim Murphy, Alex Edmonds, Crisis! and First Impressions. More bands are expected to be announced as the weeks progress. In addition, visual artists will donate their works to raise money through a silent auction.
“Music has always been the universal language of the world,” said Phillip Wallace who spoke for The Rockets. “It transcends language, cultures and religions.  It’s one of the most unique characteristics of mankind that can bring us all together at times of crisis. I can’t think of another occasion when this many Arkansas bands of this caliber have formed on behalf of the same event.”
Ivan Noisette is a Master’s Candidate at the Clinton School of Public Service and another organizing member of Arkansans4HaitiRelief.com. His family is from Haiti and he says the images of destruction are difficult to take.
“It’s just heartbreaking,” said Noisette.  “I immediately thought of my grandfather, my aunts and uncles, my nieces and nephews as well as cousins and family friends and tears came to my eyes – you don’t know what to do.”
Buying a ticket is easy – just make a suggested $25 or more contribution to the Clinton Bush Haiti Relief Fund.

“On behalf of the Clinton Foundation we are pleased and honored to partner with this great group,” said Jordan Johnson, spokesman for the Clinton Foundation. “The City of Little Rock, the Little Rock Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, the Peabody, all the talented musicians and artists we can’t thank them enough.”

“Shop and Drop!” to help Our House

When you’re at the grocery store this weekend and trying to pick out that perfect box of cereal that the whole family will enjoy, grab two. While you’re at it, grab two of every little thing you can. Inviting Arkansas is sponsoring the Our House shelter program “Shop and Drop!” The Our House shelter helps permanently lift the homeless children and adults in Little Rock off the streets.
The “Shop and Drop!” program is simple: shop for basic toiletries, drop them off at the Our House campus (302 E Roosevelt) Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. or drop them off at Janell Mason’s home at 7 Sunset Circle, Little Rock 72207. Or, if you simply cannot come in, then call Janell at 501-539-0913 and she’ll pick them up for you. It’s that easy. The goal for this program is by Monday to have two carloads of items for the Our House Board meeting.
Here is a suggestion list of items that are needed:
-          Paper Towels
-          Toilet Paper
-          Laundry Detergent
-          Cereal
-          Diapers
-          Deodorant
-          55-gallon trash bags
-          Cleaning supplies like 409, Lysol, liquid dish detergent, etc.

Join in the celebration of giving! Attend the benefit for Haiti

Trying to figure out a way to help the victims of Haiti, but just aren’t sure what to do? A great and easy start would be to attend Relief on the Ridge on Feb. 4 from 6-9 p.m. in the Pleasant Ridge Town Center. The benefit will be a fun-filled evening that will feature three bands, refreshments and a silent auction that will include items donated by businesses in the Pleasant Ridge Town Center, Pleasant Ridge West and from friends and supporters of these businesses.

There are no tickets needed to attend the event. Everything is based on donations and 100 percent of the donations will go to the American Red Cross for the relief in Haiti. Although sending money to the American Red Cross is always helpful, gathering as a community and celebrating the joy of giving to others will pay off more in the end for both you and those in need. Take a break from your busy schedule and after work, head over to the Feb. 4 benefit. The more people that attend, the more donations, so be sure to clear your schedule! By attending this event you will be making a difference in the lives of so many people.

Katie and Jennifer stopped in to check out Kiehl’s at Dillard’s Park Plaza last week.

After being treated to complimentary hand massages, the two visited with Moe Watson, the Skin Care Specialist at the store. Moe was most accommodating, following the Kiehl’s philosophy of “trying before you buy!”

Katie found products for her sensitive, dry skin, and Jennifer picked up a couple products for a guy friend and for her combination skin.

Most luxuriously, though, has been Jen’s test run with Kiehl’s Creme de Corps lotion. She’s been using it for the past month, and though she’s used Kiehl’s face products for a while, now swears by the unscented body creme. The special edition creme she is using has an added bonus since 100% of the profits support local children’s charities.

“The Creme de Corps has softened every inch of my wintery-dry skin. It’s even kept my spray tan in place MUCH longer than any lotion I’ve ever used. And it doesn’t compete with my fragrance, as it’s unscented…” she raves.

Visit Kiehl’s at Dillard’s Park Plaza. Stop by and say hi to both Moe and Mr. Bones and walk away with some fabulous gifs for yourself and those on your holiday list.

Another festive weekend ahead

Wow! Is another weekend almost here again? It seems like just yesterday we were mixing and mingling with all of you (and snapping your photo) at all the parties last weekend! Time really does fly when you’re having fun!

Speaking of fun, don’t miss the Jingle Belles Bash this Saturday, from 8 p.m. to midnight at Pavilion in the Park. It’s a party for a purpose to raise money for Centers for Youth and Families. Organizers describe it as a giant dance party, but in cocktail attire with auction items … “definitely a take-your-shoes-off-dance” kinda bash!

Suggested donation of $25 per person gets you at the full bar provided by Glazer’s Distributors of Arkansas, silent auction, catering by Trio’s and a jam-packed dance floor!

See you there!

Festive Weekend

The holiday spirit is definitely alive in Arkansas! With Festival of Trees, the Miracle League party and more, it was a fun-filled, festive weekend! Socializing and tasty treats were enjoyed by all who got dolled up and braved the cold weather. But most important is that by getting out this weekend, party-goers supported such worthy causes!

Here’s a taste from the weekend’s celebrations:

Inviting Arkansas Assistant Editor Jillian Duke and Editor Jennifer Jones step in front of the camera (for once!) at Festival After Dark, part of the three-day festival benefiting Central Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute.

Larry and Sheila Vaught at Tux ‘n Trees, the black-tie affair of Festival of Trees. All proceeds from the three-day event help support cancer patients of Arkansas. Hats off to all the volunteers and participants!

Inviting Arkansas Publisher/Owner Michele Towne met up with New York Yankees pitcher A.J. Burnett at the Miracle League party! A.J. is originally from North Little Rock. He and Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee (from Benton) may have been rivals in the World Series, but the two Arkansas-bred baseball players came together for the Miracle League All-Stars fundraiser. The event brought 10 Major League players together to Little Rock for a training camp for kids and an adult party with the players.

Michele with Philidelphia Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee and Boston Red Sox pitcher Bill Traber. Michele says the event was a success! “It was packed, lots of fun and nice because lots of the Easter Seals kids who participated in the camp got to be there. And all the money raised stays in Arkansas for more Miracle League fields to be built,” she says.

We even spotted Santa! And rumor has it he will make another appearance this coming weekend at the Miracle Ball, benefiting Arkansas Children’s Hospital. So be nice!
